Alegre All Stars

Alegre Records was a New York record label that was founded in 1956 by Al Santiago who owned a 1950s record store in The Bronx named Casalegre and co-founded by clothing businessman Ben Perlman.  It specialized in Latin music and was significant for featuring artists such as Johnny Pacheco and Tito Puente and was the first to record a series of great Latin artists, from Johnny Pacheco, Eddie Palmieri, through Willie Colón. It has been called the "Blue Note" of Latin music.

​From the '50s to the '70s, concert performances of Afro-Caribbean music in the United States were, more often than not, epic affairs. The lucky patrons of the legendary Palladium night club in New York recall enjoying sets by Machito, Tito Puente and Tito Rodríguez all in the same evening - something unthinkable by today's standards. During the golden era of Latin music, promoters made sure that the fans got their money's worth, and then some.

That was definitely the case on the evening of May 1974 when this performance by the conglomerate known as the Tico-Alegre All Stars was recorded for posterity at Carnegie Hall. The album that you hold in your hands includes tracks by the Tito Puente Concert Orchestra with guest vocalists La Lupe and Vicentico Valdés; Joe Cuba; Charlie Palmieri's orchestra with singing contributions by Vitín Avilés and Yayo El Indio; Ismael Rivera y sus Cachimbos and a grand finale courtesy of the Alegre All Stars.

As if this gallery of luminaries wasn't enough, the instrumental ensemble that evening included musical heavyweights such as Cuban maestro Cachao on bass; Mike Collazo on drums; Jimmy Sabater on timbales; José Madera on bongoes; Cándido Camero on congas; veteran Cuban flutist José Fajardo and the inimitable Barry Rogers on trombone.
The album begins with a bang thanks to Tito Puente's thunderous rendition of the 2001: A Space Odyssey Theme – “Tito’s Odyssey”. Puente was on a roll at the time. He had just released one of the most ambitious albums of his career, Tito Puente And His Concert Orchestra, he had assembled a monumental big band with the blessing of the Tico label and had incorporated the refreshing idioms of funk and '70s R&B to his musical palette.

The funk influence can be heard on the collection's second track, “Confusión”, which reunites the timbalero with his former vocalist Vicentico Valdés. The spoken introduction by Valdés is endearing, as the singer candidly admits that he is not exactly crazy about the fusion of bolero and R&B ballad that Puente has concocted. He calls the song itself una confusión. No wonder, then, that his delivery is somewhat hesitant, failing to match the fire in Puente's tasty arrangement.

Unlike Vicentico, La Lupe gives it all with the sympathetic backing of the Puente orchestra on a mesmerizing version of "Changó" which arguably stands as the strongest track in the album. A delightful feeling of unstoppable frenzy is ignited from the track's opening bars.

At times, the brass section recalls jazz-rock outfits of the era such as Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. And La Lupe sounds in top shape, her voice evoking infinite amounts of passion, fury and tenderness. One can only imagine how tickled she was to be reunited with the bandleader with whom she recorded a string of seminal albums in the '60s.
Fans of Puerto Rican singer Ismael Rivera will enjoy his brief but delightful contribution to this album. Backed by Los Cachimbos, Maelo delivers a melodious version of Bobby Capó's ”Sale El Sol”, his phrasing showcasing that feeling of old fashioned innocence that garnered Rivera so many fans across the Americas.

The session concludes, appropriately enough, with a joyful descarga – “La Cosa Alegre”. The longest track in the album, it boasts memorable solos by, among others, Alfredo Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone and the swinging piano of Javier Vásquez.

Like the best of live albums do, "Recorded Live At Carnegie Hall Vol. 1" makes you wish you could have been there. Now, thanks to the vision of Tico producer Joe Cain and the wonders of digital remastering, we can. Not in person, of course. But at least we can be there in spirit and sound.

Entre las décadas del '50 y el '70, los conciertos de música afrocaribeña en los Estados Unidos eran, por lo general, asuntos de dimensiones épicas. Los afortunados clientes del legendario Palladium en Nueva York cuentan haber visto a Machito, Tito Puente y Tito Rodríguez compartiendo la misma tarima en una noche - algo que hoy en día parece casi irreal. Durante la era dorada de la música latina, los promotores hacían todo lo posible para que los fanáticos quedaran completamente satisfechos.

Un buen ejemplo de esta tendencia es la noche de mayo de 1974 en la que se llevó a cabo el concierto de la Tico-Alegre All Stars en el Carnegie Hall. El disco que usted tiene en sus manos incluye temas de la Tito Puente Concert Orchestra con La Lupe y Vicentico Valdés como cantantes invitados; Joe Cuba; la orquesta de Charlie Palmieri con contribuciones de Vitín Avilés y Yayo El Indio, Ismael Rivera y sus Cachimbos y un majestuoso final de la mano de la Alegre All Stars.

Como si este desfile de luminarias no fuera suficiente, el conjunto instrumental de esa velada incluyó a grandes figuras como el maestro cubano Cachao en el bajo; Mike Collazo en batería; Jimmy Sabater en timbales; José Madera en bongó; Cándido Camero en las congas; el veterano flautista cubano José Fajardo y el inimitable Barry Rogers en trombón.
El disco comienza explosivamente con Tito Puente y una versión casi psicodélica del tema de 2001: Odisea del Espacio – “La Odisea De Tito”. Puente estaba en su apogeo en ese momento. Acababa de lanzar uno de los discos más ambiciosos de toda su carrera, Tito Puente And His Concert Orchestra, había juntado una banda monumental y también había incorporado los refrescantes sonidos del funk y el r&b a su paleta musical.

La influencia del funk se puede escuchar en el segundo tema, “Confusión”, que reúne al timbalero con su antiguo vocalista Vicentico Valdés. La introducción de Valdés es entrañable, dado que el cantante no muestra el menor reparo en expresar sus dudas sobre la fusión de bolero y r&b que cocinó Puente, agregando que la misma canción es una confusión. Tal vez por eso, su interpretación es algo titubeante, sin poder emular el fuego de la orquestación de Puente.

Contrariamente a Vicentico, La Lupe se compenetra totalmente con la orquesta durante una seductora versión de “Changó” que probablemente sea el punto más alto del disco. Desde los primeros compases, el tema crea un sentimiento de frenesí incontrolable.

Por momentos, la sección de vientos recuerda a grupos de jazz-rock de la época como Chicago y Blood, Sweat & Tears. Y La Lupe aparenta estar en la cúspide de su poderío vocal, expresando una mezcla irresistible de pasión, furia y ternura. Es grato imaginarse cómo se habrá sentido la cantante al reencontrarse con el director de orquesta con el que había grabado una serie de importantes LP para la compañía Tico durante la década de los '60.

Los admiradores del cantante puertorriqueño Ismael Rivera quedarán encantados con su contribución a esta grabación. Acompañado por Los Cachimbos, Maelo entona una melodiosa versión de “Sale El Sol” de Bobby Capó. Su fraseo encierra ese clima de anticuada inocencia que le ganó tantos fanáticos a través de las Américas.

La sesión concluye con una descarga – “La Cosa Alegre”. El tema más largo del disco incluye descollantes solos de, entre otros, Alfredo Chocolate Armenteros en trompeta, Barry Rogers en trombón y el piano repleto de swing de Javier Vásquez.

Como todos los buenos discos en vivo, "Recorded Live At Carnegie Hall Vol. 1" provoca en el escucha un fuerte deseo de haber estado en la sala de conciertos durante esa noche feliz. Ahora, gracias a la visión del productor de la Tico Joe Cain y las bondades de la remasterización digital, podemos hacerlo. No en persona, claro está. Pero sí en sonido y espíritu.
