El 28 de noviembre de 1940, nace Frank 'Frankie' Malabé (1940 - 1994), en Nueva York; bravo percusionista y uno de los congueros del mundo más respetados durante la época dorada de la salsa, quien colaboró con muchas estrellas de gran magnitud, como Tito Rodríguez, Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, la Alegre All Stars, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri y Charlie Palmieri, entre muchos otros. Frank Malabé se crió en East Harlem, el área universalmente conocido por los latinos como "El Barrio". Su juventud la pasó jugando a la pelota, la pesca de bagre en el Central Park y compartiendo con amigos cercanos como Willie Bobo.

Cuando Frankie tenía solamente ocho años, fue inspirado por un músico del barrio conocido como "Don Pulli", que silbaba melodías, utilizaba un rallador de queso como un güiro, y una caja como una conga. Para cuando llegó a los diez años, trabajando en una bodega y en una tintorería, Frankie había ahorrado el dinero suficiente para comprar su primera conga. Además, el legendario guitarrista cubano ciego, Arsenio Rodríguez, le propinaba a Frankie algo de aliento.

Durante los próximos años, Frankie practicaba diariamente y se beneficiaba de crecer en un momento y en un lugar donde podía participar en descargas de rumba con tales músicos como "Little Ray" Romero, Tommy López Sr., Changuito, Kako, y José "Buyú" Mangual. En 1990, Frankie co escribió la innovadora guía de estudio, "Afro-Cuban Rhythms for the Drumset", con percusionista e historiador, Bob Weiner. El libro recibió buenas críticas y el paquete de libro / cd se destaca como uno de los mejores cebadores y referencias históricas sobre el tema, y contiene excelentes muestras de audio del toque único de Frankie en las congas.

A pesar de haber luchado muchos años contra el abuso de las sustancias; un hecho que conduciría a su muerte prematura a solamente los 53 años, los logros de Frankie y sus aportaciones a la música latina han sido increíbles y completaron un círculo.  Frank Malabé comenzó como músico autodidacta, llegó a la cima de su profesión y dedicó gran parte de su vida posterior a la enseñanza de su oficio.

On November 28, 1940, is born Frank 'Frankie' Malabé (1940 - 1994) in New York; a fierce percussionist and one of the world's most respected conga drummers during the golden age of salsa, who collaborated with many stars of great magnitude, such as Tito Rodriguez, Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, the Alegre All Stars, Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri and Charlie Palmieri, among many others.  Perhaps the ensemble that Frankie is most often associated with is the renowned Larry Harlow Orchestra.

Frank Malabé was raised in East Harlem, the neighborhood universally known to Latinos as "El Barrio".  His youth was spent playing stickball, fishing for catfish in Central Park and hanging out with close friends like Willie Bobo.

When Frankie was only eight years old, he became inspired by a neighborhood musician known as "Don Pulli," who whistled tunes, used a cheese grater as a guiro, and a box as a conga. By the time he reached ten years old, Frankie had saved enough money from working at a bodega and a dry cleaners to buy his first conga drum.  A veteran conga player, Ray Armando, knowing of Frankie's interest in the percussion, gave him some pointers, and so did bongocero, Bobby Flash. Also, the legendary blind Cuban guitarist, Arsenio Rodriguez, would offer Frankie some encouragement.  

For the next few years Frankie practiced daily and benefitted from growing up at a time and in a place where he was able to participate in rumba jam sessions with such musicians as "Little Ray" Romero, Tommy Lopez Sr., Changuito, Kako, and José "Buyú" Mangual. Frankie's ever growing fascination with percussion instruments was further inspired by great congueros such as Cándido, Mongo Santamaría, and reportedly his greatest influence, Carlos "Patato" Valdez,  Eventually, Frankie would began working with multiple drums. 

Frankie´s first professional experience was with Ángel René, a timbalero also from El Barrio and would later make his first recording with Harvey Averne and Pete Terrace. The result of these experiences was that by the time he was twenty years old, Frankie already was recording and performing with Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and the Alegre All-Stars.

In 1977, Frankie joined the teaching staff of the Drummers Collective, a world-renowned learning center for drumset and percussion.  He also joined The Harbor Performing Arts Center, a repository of the history and culture of Latin music that provides low-cost musical instruction to the community. At both of these schools, he delved into traditional Latin-American rhythms as well as the creative possibilities of applying these to the drumset. 

In 1990, Frankie co-authored the groundbreaking study guide, "Afro-Cuban Rhythms For The Drumset," with percusionist and historian, Bob Weiner.  The book received critical acclaim and the book/cd package stands out as one of the best primers and historical references on the subject, and contains excellent audio examples of Frankie's unique touch on congas.

Despite having struggled many years with substance abuse; a fact that most likely led to his untimely death at only 53 years old, Frankie's accomplishments and contributions to Latin music have been amazing and went full circle. Frank Malabe began as a self-taught musician, rose to the top of his field, and devoted much of his later life to teaching of his trade.
