El 31 de diciembre del año 1975 nace Willy Torres en Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico; bravo sonero, músico polifacético y productor que ha trabajado con Spanish Harlem Orchestrra y "Los Soneros del Barrio", entre otras orquestas y ha tenido una impresionante carrera en solitario.

Una vez tuve la oportunidad de servir de DJ en el increíble club nocturno de la Ciudad de Nueva York, The Taj Lounge, durante un lunes por la noche.  Mi hermano de los tocadiscos, Henry Knowles, fue el promotor de la noche y me sentía honrado tener esta oportunidad.  Fue una noche muy especial porque otro buena amiga, devota historiadora y aficionada de la salsa, Ana Flores, me había acompañado.  Llegamos temprano y no tenía ni idea de que habría una orquesta en vivo.  Haciendo un número en vivo en frente de la cabina del DJ fue Willy Torres junto con varios otros grandes músicos. Inmediatamente reconocí a Bobby Allende en las congas. Mientras estaba sentado en el bar, esperando mi momento de trabajar, entró otro gran artista con el que recientemente yo había colaborado en algunos proyectos en Chicago, Frankie Vázquez, el Sonero del Barrio.  Después de charlar un rato con Ana y conmigo, Frankie se unió a la banda de Willy. ¡Guauu! ¡Qué banda con saoco!  ¡Qué sonido increible!  Fue entonces cuando me enamoré de la escena salsera de la Ciudad de Nueva York!   Charlé brevemente con Willy esa noche y después lo entrevisté en mi programa de radio.

Así que, cuando vi que el 31 de diciembre era el cumpleaños de Willy, sabía que tenía que investigar su biografía y publicarla en mi blog.  Es con gran aprecio para con este artista, Willy Torres, que presento esta entrada del blog.

Willy tuvo la suerte de haber venido de una familia de músicos; su madre es cantante y su padre percusionista latino y vocalista.  Antes de que saliera la familia de Puerto Rico, Willy había comenzado a estudiar las congas con su padre y el amigo de su padre, Ramón Azor, a sólo cuatro años de edad y pronto comenzó a acompañar a su padre a sus conciertos y de vez en cuando tocaba las congas.  Otros artistas notables a los cuales atribuye Willy de haberle ayudado con su temprano desarrollo musical fueron Freddy Kenton, Porfirio Morel y su abuelo, Ramón Torres.  En algún momento a mediados de los años 80, la familia Torres se mudó al Bronx, Nueva York.

En cuanto a la capacidad de cantar de Willy, mientras que todavía asistía a la escuela secundaria sus primeros esfuerzos como solista fueron con una banda formada por sus tíos, Nelson y Juan Ramón (Monchi), llamada Los Hermanos Torres.  Inicialmente, Willy tocó el saxofón para la banda y sus tíos comenzaron a enseñarle cómo ser un líder de una banda. Puesto que Monchi, vocalista de la banda, estaba muy ocupado durante esta época, tuvo dificultades para encontrar el tiempo para aprender todas las canciones.  Así que, el co-líder, Nelson, quien en ese momento era también el bajista de La Majestad, informó al líder y compositor de La Majestad, Miguel Maldonado, que estaba buscando un cantante para acompañar a Monchi. Maldonado le sugirió que intentara usar a Willy.  Nelson siguió el consejo de Maldonado.

Alrededor de 1989, la banda de Maldonado, Orquesta Majestad, perdió a su cantante principal y Maldonado, que para entonces estaba enterado del creciente éxito de Willy en la voz principal, ofreció el puesto a Willy; quien lo aceptó alegremente.  Así que fue entonces, en 1989, que Willy hizo su primer debut profesional y grabaría cuatro canciones con la Orquesta Majestad.  También durante este período de tiempo, Willy tuvo la oportunidad de cantar con Larry Harlow, y con la orquesta de la orquesta de Johnny Ray, Salsa Con Clase. Cuando se tiene en cuenta que durante este tiempo en la vida de Willy, seguía asistiendo a la escuela secundaria, mientras aprendía canciones, tocaba el saxofón y escribía música, queda patente que Willy tenía un alto nivel de determinación, persistencia y ambición!

Después de su trabajo con la orquesta Latin Legends de Larry Harlow, muchas puertas estaban abiertas para Willy.  A partir de ahí, trabajó con una larga lista de realeza de la salsa, incluyendo, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Víctor Manuelle, Johnny Rivera, Domingo Quiñones, Ray Sepúlveda, y Conjunto Clásico, sólo para nombrar unos pocos.

En 1993, Willy fue recomendado y después ofrecido un puesto como corista con Víctor Manuelle.  Sin embargo, esto significaba que tendría que regresar a su natal Puerto Rico. Después de dar la proposición cierta consideración, Willy hizo el movimiento y permanecería en Puerto Rico, y muy ocupado, por cerca de cinco años.

Hacia finales de 1998, después de dejar la orquesta de Manuelle, Willy tenía deseos de producir, entrenar a cantantes, grabar CDs y abrir su propio estudio de grabación y empresa de producción.  Para alcanzar estos objetivos, Willy regresó a Nueva York.  Mientras trabajaba en sus nuevas metas, Willy continuó grabando con otra lista larga de productores muy talentosos, entre ellos Sergio George, Pablo "Chino" Nuñez, Guillermo Ruiz, Ramón Rodríguez, Guillermo Calderón, Julito Alvarado, Osvaldo Picacho, Omar Alfanno, Luis Cabarcas , Mike Rivera, Edwin Sánchez, Paul Simon, Robby Rosa, para nombrar unos pocos, y con artistas como Johnny Ray, Ray Sepúlveda, DLG, Huey Dunbar, George Lamond, Frankie Negrón, Van Lester, Junior González, Joe King, Luis Damon, Rey Ruiz, Ley Alejandro, Alexandre Pires, Ricardo Montaner, Ricky Martin, Chayanne, Carolina La O, Brenda K. Starr.

En 2003, Willy recibió lo que resulta ser una llamada telefónica muy fortuita de Oscar Hernández, quien en ese momento buscabo un suplente para Hermán Olivera por un par de fechas.  Willy aceptó de buen grado la oferta y se encontró cantando solos, así como cantando junto a los sonderos maestros Ray de la Paz y Frankie Vázquez.  Esto marcaría el comienzo de la exposición internacional de Willy.

En 2008, Willy colaboró con DJ Henry Knowles para producir el álbum, Back on the Streets - A Taste of Spanish Harlem, que fue el álbum de regreso de New Swing Sextet.

También en 2008, y también co-producido por DJ Henry Knowles, Willy lanzó su primer álbum en solitario llamado, Lo Que Traigo Yo - Willy's NYC Salsa Proyect, por el que hacía los papeles de director musical, productor, compositor, conguero, bongocero, vocalista principal, ingeniero de grabación y hasta arreglista de algunos temas.  El proyecto es una mezcla de cuatro de las composiciones originales de Willy, "Baila con sabor", "Lo que traigo yo", "Si te preguntan" y "Fajardeño pa 'mi tierra", y temas de clásicos como "A las seis" de Joe Cuba, "Rompe Saraguéy" de Héctor Lavoe, "Yambeque" de Tito Puente (popularizado por La Sonora Ponceña) y "La muerta" de El Gran Combo.  Por sorpresa, este álbum fue grabado por un total de solamente seis músicos, entre ellos Willy, sin embargo, tiene el poder y saoco de una orquesta mucho más grande.  ¡Por cierto es una producción increíble!

On December 31, 1975 is born, Willy Torres in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico; fierce sonero, multifaceted musician and producer who has worked with “Spanish Harlem Orquestra” y “Los Soneros del Barrio”, among other bands and has had his own impressive solo career.  

I once had the opportunity to spin at New York City's amazing nightclub, The Taj Lounge, on a Monday night.  My turn-table brother, Henry Knowles, was the promoter of the night and I was honored to have this opportunity.  It was a very special night because another good friend and devout salsa historian and aficionada, Ana Flores, accompanied me there.  We arrived early and I had no idea that there would be a live band! Performing live in front of the DJ booth was Willy Torres along wIth several other great musicians.  I immediately recognized Bobby Allende on the congas.  As I sat at the bar, awaiting my time to spin, in walks another great artists with whom I recently had collaborated on some projects back home in Chicago, Frankie Vázquez, el Sonero del Barrio!  After chatting with Ana and me for a while, Frankie joined Willy's band.  Wow!  What a swinging band!  What an amazing sound!  It was then that I fell in love with New York City's salsa scene!  I chatted briefly with Willy that night and later interviewed him on my radio show.

So, when I saw that December 31st was Willy's birthday, I knew that I had to research his bio and post it on my blog.  It is with great appreciation of this artist, Willy Torres, that I present this blog entry!    
Willy was fortunate to have come from a musical family; his mother is a singer and his father a Latin percussionist and vocalist.  Before the family left Puerto Rico, Willy had begun studying the conga drums with his father and his father's friend, Ramón Azor, at only four years old and soon began accompanying his father to his gigs and from time to time playing the congas.  Other notables who Willy attributes to having helped him with his early musical development were Freddy Kenton, Porfirio Morel and his grandfather, Ramón Torres.  Sometime in the mid 80s, the Torres family moved to the Bronx, New York.

As for Willy's singing ability, while he was still attending high school his first efforts as a soloist were with a band formed by his uncles, Nelson and Juan Ramón (Monchi), called Los Hermanos Torres.  Initially, Willy played the saxophone for the band and his uncles began teaching him how to be a band leader.  Since Monchi, the band's lead singer, was very busy during this time, he had difficulties finding the time to learn all the songs.   So, the co-leader, Nelson, who at the time was also the bass player for La Majestad, informed the leader and composer of La Majestad, Miguel Maldonado, that he was looking for a singer to accompany Monchi.  Maldonado suggested that they try using Willy.  Nelson took Maldonado's advice.  

Around 1989, Maldonado's band, Orquesta Majestad, lost its lead singer and Maldonado, who by then knew of Willy's burgeoning success on lead vocals, offered the position to Willy; which Willy gladly accepted.   So it was then, in 1989, that Willy made his first professional debut and would record four songs with Orquesta Majestad.  Also during this time frame, Willy had the opportunity to sing with Larry Harlow, and with Johnny Ray's orchestra, Salsa Con Clase.  When one considers that during this time in Willy's life, he was still attending high school, while learning songs, playing the saxophone and writing music,, it is clear that Willy had a high level of determination, persistance and ambition! 

After his work with Larry Harlow's Latin Legends Band, many doors were open for Willy.  From there, he worked with a long list of salsa royalty, including, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Victor Manuelle, Johnny Rivera, Domingo Quiñones, Ray Sepulveda, and Conjunto Clásico, just to name a few.  

In 1993, Willy was recommended and later offer a position as a backup singer with Victor Manuelle.  However, this meant that he would have to move back to his native Puerto Rico.  After giving the proposition some consideration, Willy made the move and would remain in Puerto Rico, and very busy, for about five years.    

Towards the end of 1998, after leaving Manuelle's orchestra, Willy had desires to produce, arrange, coach singers, record cds and open his own recording studio and production company.  To achieve these goals, Willy returned to New York.  While working on his new goals, Willy continued to record with another long list of very talented producers, including Sergio George, Pablo "Chino" Nuñez, William Ruiz, Ramón Rodríguez, Guillermo Calderón, Julito Alvarado, Osvaldo Pichaco, Omar Alfanno, Luis Cabarcas, Mike Rivera, Edwin Sánchez, Paul Simon, Robby Rosa, to name a few, and with artists such as Johnny Ray, Ray Sepulveda, DLG, Huey Dunbar, George Lamond, Frankie Negrón, Van Lester, Junior González, Joe King, Luis Damón, Rey Ruiz, Ley Alejandro, Alexandre Pires, Ricardo Montaner, Ricky Martin, Chayanne, Carolina La O, Brenda K. Starr.    

In 2003, Willy received what would turn out to be a very fortuitous phone call from Oscar Hernández, who at the time was looking for a sub for Hermán Olivera for a couple of dates.  Willy gladly accepted the offer and found himself soloing as well as singing alongside master soneros Ray de la Paz and Frankie Vázquez.  This would mark the beginning of Willy's international exposure.    

In 2008, Willy collaborated with DJ Henry Knowles to produce the album, Back on the Streets - A Taste of Spanish Harlem, which was the comeback album of New Swing Sextet.  

Also in 2008, and also co-produced by DJ Henry Knowles, Willy released his first solo album called, Lo Que Traigo Yo - Willy's NYC Salsa Project, for which he wore the hats of musical director, producer, composer, conga player, bongo player, lead vocalist, recording engineer and even arranger for some songs.  The project is a mixture of four of Willy's original compositions, "Baila con sabor," "Lo que traigo yo," "Si te preguntan" and "Fajardeño pa' mi tierra," and revamped covers of classics such as Joe Cuba Sextet's "A Las Seis", Héctor Lavoe's "Rompe Saragüey", Tito Puente's "Yambeque" (made famous by La Sonora Ponceña) and El Gran Combo's "La Muerte".  Amazingly, this album was recorded by a total of only six musicians, including Willy, yet has the powerful and swinging sound of a much bigger band!  It is an amazing production for sure!
